National Day for Truth & Reconciliation: remember. reflect

Today is National Day for Truth & Reconciliation. Our day of learning, remembering and reflecting continues:

1. Just yesterday, a federal judge ruled that the First Nations children are entitled to government compensation for the discrimination faced in the welfare system for children on reserve (this was challenged by the federal government)

2. Have you heard about the Jordan’s Principle? Named in memory of Jordan River Anderson, a five-year old who died of a medical condition while the Province of Manitoba and the federal government fought over who would pay for his care at home, the Jordan's Principle ensures that no First Nations child is deprived of the medical care they need when they need it. The federal government was ordered (by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal in 2016) to expand the current limitations that barely qualify First Nations children who need care, which has not happened still. The federal government's attempt to challenge the Tribunal order at the federal court failed as well.

3. So what did I do? I donated to the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society, specifically to the Jordan's Principle cause because it’s my responsibility, as a settler, to continue to educate, support and be an ally of the First Nations and fight for their rights (my family & I fled our home country multiple times due to civil war)

4. I recently registered for the Indigenous Studies course through the faculty of @uanativestudies (the only kind in all of North America!) at the University of Alberta. It’s free to enrol and join anytime.

5. The picture in my post is a painting called “A Tribute to Aboriginal Women” by Leah Dorion. The course offers an interactive mode where you can click through the different regions of the painting and hear the artist’s perspectives. A great insight into the indigenous women! I love the arts! And this has inspired me to tell a story with my own painting. Would you like me to share my creation?
